Wise Gals Organics - Who we areDiana and Christy

Wise Gals Organics is a family business, owned and operated by the mother-daughter team of Diana Davidson and Christy Chase, shown directly to the right. Our business pays homage to the many generations of women who not only tended to the health of their families, but preserved their knowledge for future generations.

From the earliest recorded history, in addition to their roles as child-bearers and homemakers, women were the healers. Over the centuries, they learned the medicinal properties of the various plants that grew wild around them, and eventually began to cultivate and nurture the ones that they found to be valuable. Harmony with Mother Earth was a basic tenet of most early belief systems, from the Celts of Europe to the Native Americans.

In most early cultures, this role was regarded as vital, and even sacred. While the popular image of the ancient Egyptian healer/priest, Native American medicine man, or the Celtic druid is most often male, the reality is that in these early societies, the healing person was usually a woman, whose role as a caregiver was not limited to that of a midwife.

The education of these health care pioneers was practical rather than academic. Since the written word is a fairly recent development, it was of critical importance that a healer’s knowledge be passed along to each succeeding generation. This too was considered a sacred trust.

Speedwell plantAs western civilization progressed, religious and political conflicts endangered the traditional role of the wise woman.  The ancient beliefs were discredited as backward, and traditional healing arts were regarded as suspicious, even sinful.  Fear and resentment led the male-centric power structure to impose its will on those it regarded as a threat. From the depths of the dark ages, to the early colonial times in America, healing women were persecuted for practicing their traditional role of caring for the sick and injured. In spite of all of this, the wise women preserved their knowledge for all of us.

With the advent of modern medicine, herbal healers again found themselves under attack. Their time-proven methods were looked down upon as un-scientific and inefficient. Complex drugs and advanced surgical techniques offered rapid, and seemingly miraculous results. As this advanced technology became commonplace, it also grew evident that there was a price to be paid for the benefits of drug-and-cut medicine. Pharmaceuticals often have severe side-effects and interactions. Surgery, even using the latest equipment and methods, places severe stress on the body. We recognize the need for modern medicine. It saves countless lives, and in many cases it is the only viable treatment for serious injury or disease. On the other hand, we cannot afford to ignore the benefits of natural medicine, which works with the body rather than against it.

In recent years there has been renewed interest in natural medicine. People throughout the world are waking up to the healing properties of plants, and the body-mind-spirit approach to wellness. We are all part of nature's balance, and it only makes sense to use sustainable, earth-friendly resources to promote and preserve our health. Once derided as charlatans, herbalists and naturopathic physicians are now highly respected health care professionals, with accredited schools dedicated to their training.

We dedicate this site to all those who came before us, who have kept the natural healing arts alive. All of us are in their debt, which we can begin to repay by doing our part to preserve, and add to their knowledge for future generations. Learn, pass it on, and above all do no harm. Let your kitchen be your apothecary!
